Please do not burn garbage or green wood in your home wood stoves, because of the increased creosote causes congestion and increased risk of fires.

Also did you know must fire departments offer a Free Home Safety Inspection? This includes checking your Smoke Alarms, the charge on your fire extinguishers, and CO detectors. Call your local fire department for details.

Wood Stoves for Additional Heat Source

It appears winter is all around us... many customers are or have already installed a wood stove or other alternate heat sources in their homes. There isn't any concern with us on any rate increases or other issues as a result.
Home policies through our office cover any kind of fire loss, except Arson. Our claims always will investigate the cause of fire in conjunction with the fire department for the cause. If the cause is the result of a poor installation there is a possibility the replacement of the wood stove itself would be denied, not the damage as a result.
Please have a contractor install your wood stove or have a licensed, bonded, insured company inspect the install and get proof the inspection was done.

We have had a few fires already as a result of improper installs.

We now can insure Mobile Homes!

This is great news for many of our customers. Please call us or email for a free quote.

Resident Student Discount

Now that school is underway, it's time to consider another way that to save on your auto insurance. The Resident Student Discount offers a discount for licensed children attending school away from home. This discount is available in Alaska. To qualify for the Resident Student Discount, the operator must:

*Reside away from home at a school, college or other educational institution located at least 100 miles away from the place of principal garaging of the rated automobile.

*Not have a car with them when they are away at school.
{Essentially, a student who meets the distance requirement may be classified as a restricted operator and receive the Resident Student Discount. This is an item discount; it only applies to the automobile on which the student is rated.}

It is important to remember that in order to receive the discount, the student cannot have an automobile with him or her at school. The intent of the Resident Student Discount is that the student is still a member of the household {or you are financially responsible}, but only drives a vehicle on the policy occasionally when he or she returns home from school on holidays, weekends or vacations. If the student has a car with him or her at school, he or she will not receive the discount. The amount of the Resident Student Discount is approximately 10% on the car originally rated on. Please call or email for more information.

Also, please note that if the student qualifies for both the Good Student Discount and the Resident Student Discount, only the Resident Student Discount will apply. The discount is available on preferred policy's only.

Flood Concerns Rise With The Rivers

A year of heavy rainfall can be dangerous to a home in many ways. Something you may not know is that damage to a home from runoff, and river or lake overflow, is something specifically excluded by most home insurance policies. To cover this type of loss the National FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Flood Insurance program was enacted. If you have a Flood Insurance Policy and need to make a claim, along with your policy number, here are some numbers you should keep handy:

To report a claim:
1-800-54-STORM (1-800-547-8676)

To obtain information regarding an existing claim:
1-888-202-3716

If you do not have Flood Insurance already, unfortunately now is not the time. FEMA has a mandatory waiting period of 30 days for all new applications. Even without insurance, there are things you can do to prepare yourself and your family.

In cooperation with the Fairbanks North Star Borough Emergency Operations Department we have the following suggestions:
Assemble a Supply Kit Containing:
A First Aid Kit
Canned Food (don't forget the can opener!)
Bottled Water
Rubber Boots and Gloves
Battery Powered Radio, Flashlights and plenty of extra batteries
Find an emergency evacuation location. These may include a friend's home, a motel, or a local shelter.
Avoid traveling through areas which have been issued Flood Warnings. Roads can sustain severe damage and may have closure periods, which can cause you to be cut off from your home and resources. Wet, or submerged roads, can also be a serious driving hazard. Even at a low rate of speed a vehicle can easily loss control.
Have emergency contact information on you. In the event of serious injury this will help local authorizes and hospitals to obtain necessary medial information.
Inform both a local and an out of town friend or relative (preferably one on your emergency contact list) of your emergency plan, including your evacuation location. If you, or a family member (especially a child) goes missing, this information could be vital.
