Prevention of Freeze ups

One of the most common and most expensive claims we handle every year is Freeze ups. It's common for us Alaskan's to travel during the dark and cold months, however this is when these horrible claims occur. The best prevention is to have a house sitter. Another option is to install Freeze/Water Alarms in your home. There are many to choose from. Also if you have an alarm system on your home, it may be a simple upgrade with little to no added cost. Here are some we found on a Google search

Drinking myths

As long as you've gotten a few hours of sleep, you'll be OK to drive the morning after you've been drinking.
Power naps, even in the middle of the night, are not sufficient. Alcohol is processed out of the body at your body's own fixed rate. Your reflexes and other physical abilities can be affected for as many as 10 hours after you've finished your last drink (and this could be longer if you had a tremendous amount to drink).

If I have too much to drink, I can drink a lot of coffee to sober up quickly. Right?
Ha. Tell us another one! Drinking a lot of coffee after drinking too much alcohol may, however, increase your discomfort through the need to use the bathroom while being transported to the jail on DUI charges. Only time will remove alcohol from the system. It takes the body approximately one hour to eliminate the alcohol in one drink. An old saying goes, "give a drunk a cup of coffee and all you have is a wide-awake drunk.

Splashing cold water on my face or taking a cold shower will help sober me up.
Splash away! And by all means, take a cold shower. It may make you cleaner, but it won't sober you up or make you a safe driver. The deputies at the jail, however, prefer clean drunks and recommend showering prior to doing anything that will lead to your arrest, such as driving after you've been drinking.

More go to http://www.augustadui.com/misconceptions.cfm

Please do not drive drunk or buzzed.
Fact: Among all the embarrassment and other expenses, your auto rates will double or triple.

Do you know your rights as a tenant?

However, as a renter, it may seem like the fate of your apartment is in your landlord’s hands. Everyone has heard those stories about a landlord who fails to keep his/her building up to health and safety codes or those who take months to fix leaks and or broken smoke detectors.

While you can purchase renter’s insurance to protect your belongings from theft and fires, you should also be proactive in learning about your rights as a tenant and voicing your concerns when necessary. While tenant rights vary by state, following are some of the most common apartment renter’s rights, most likely addressed in your state’s landlord-tenant law:

1. Residences should be habitable and in compliance with housing and health codes
As a renter, you have the right to an apartment with adequate water, electricity and heat as well as a structurally safe apartment. This means if you find mold, heavy rust, bugs or rats, and/or broken or missing smoke detectors, you should contact your landlord immediately. If your landlord has violated terms related to the health, safety or necessary repairs of your apartment, you might be able to break your lease without legal or economic ramifications.

2. Generally, landlords are responsible for making necessary repairs and performing maintenance tasks in a timely fashion
Before you sign your lease, make sure you have discussed the turnaround time for any repairs or maintenance tasks and the agreed upon time down in writing. You should also check to see if you can order repairs and deduct the cost from rent.

3. Landlords cannot change the locks, shut off your utilities or evict you without notice

While you’ve probably seen movies where an unsuspecting renter comes home to find his couch and other belongings along the sidewalk, most states prohibits landlords from evicting you without a court ordered eviction noticed.

4. Your security deposit is regulated
Many states not only limit the amount your landlord can charge for security deposits, most states also require that your security deposit be returned within 14 to 30 days after you have moved out. Your landlord cannot deduct from your security deposit for normal “wear and tear” and some states, like Illinois, require an itemized report of deductions.

SlowDownAlaska.org

This is a great site with tons of neat tips, quiz, Teen Driving Contract and advice.

One very important tip: The state of Alaska requires but “50/100” of liability insurance (AS 28.20.440 & AS 28.22.101). That means your insurer will pay “$50,000 per person, up to $100,000 per wreck.” This is far too little. It won’t even cover the first week’s stay in the hospital, much less the lifetime of pain you can cause by a single, inadvertent mistake.

Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver- WHAT IT REALLY COVERS

Know what is and isn’t covered when renting a rental car, RV, motorcycle etc. Call the office to find out if you are covered. Below is the actual fine print in a Signature Visa Credit Card agreement. In short.. if you’re auto insurance doesn’t fully cover the rental car, it may save a lot of heart ache later to just buy the insurance at the rental counter.

What is this benefit?
When certain terms and conditions are met, the Visa Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver benefit ("Auto Rental CDW") provides—at no additional charge—reimbursement for damage due to collision or theft up to the actual cash value of most rental vehicles. In your country of residence, this benefit is supplemental to, and excess of, any valid and collectible insurance from any other source. We will reimburse only for that damage or theft not payable by any other party.
IMPORTANT!
What is not covered?
• Any obligation you assume under any agreement (other than the deductible under your personal auto policy).
• Any violation of the auto rental agreement or this benefit.
• Injury of anyone or damage to anything inside or outside the rental vehicle.
• Loss or theft of personal belongings.
• Personal liability.
• Expenses assumed, waived, or paid by the rental agency or its insurer.
• Cost of any insurance or collision damage waiver offered by or purchased through the auto rental company.
• Depreciation of the rental vehicle caused by loss or damage including, but not limited to "diminished value."
• Expenses reimbursable by your insurer, employer, or employer’s insurance.
• Loss due to intentional acts, or due to the driver(s) being under the influence of alcohol, intoxicants, or drugs, or due to contraband or illegal activities.
• Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, or mechanical breakdown.
• Items not installed by the original manufacturer.
• Loss due to off-road operation of the rental vehicle.
• Loss due to hostility of any kind (including, but not limited to, war, invasion, rebellion, or insurrection).
• Confiscation by authorities.
• Vehicles that do not meet the definition of covered vehicles.
• Rental periods that either exceed or are intended to exceed fifteen (15) consecutive days within your country of residence or thirty-one (31) consecutive days outside your country of residence.
• Leases and mini leases.
• Loss or damage as a result of the cardholder’s lack of reasonable care in protecting the rental vehicle before and after damage occurs (for example, leaving the vehicle running and unattended).
• Losses reported more than forty-five (45) days* from the date of loss.
• Losses for which a claim form has not been received within ninety (90) days* from the date of loss.
• Losses for which all required documentation has not been received within 365 days from the date of loss.
• Losses from rental transactions which originated in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, or Northern Ireland.
• What types of rental vehicles are not covered?
• Excluded worldwide are: expensive, exotic, and antique automobiles; certain vans; vehicles that have an open cargo bed; trucks; motorcycles, mopeds, and motorbikes; limousines; and recreational vehicles.

Examples of excluded expensive or exotic automobiles are the Aston Martin, Bentley, Bricklin, Daimler, DeLorean, Excalibur, Ferrari, Jensen, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maserati, Porsche, and Rolls Royce. However, selected models of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, and Lincoln are covered.

An antique automobile is defined as any vehicle over twenty (20) years old or any vehicle that has not been manufactured for ten (10) years or more.

This benefit is provided for only those vans manufactured and designed to transport a maximum of eight (8) people and which is used exclusively to transport people.

Update on Flood Insurance "hiatus"

As you probably know, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) expired on midnight May 31, 2010 and has not been reauthorized by Congress. Consequently, the Program is experiencing a hiatus – a period without authority to:

  • Issue new policies for which application and premium payment dates are on or after June 1, 2010, or
  • Issue increased coverage on existing policies for which endorsement and premium payment dates are on or after June 1, 2010, or
  • Issue renewal policies for which the renewal premium is received by the company on or after June 1, 2010, and after the end of the 30-day renewal grace period,

until Congress reauthorizes the Program.

While awaiting Congressional reauthorization, FEMA is issuing the guidance below. For the most up-to-date information on the status of the NFIP please visit http://www.fema.gov/business/nfip/nfip-reauth.shtm or call the FEMA News Desk at 202-646-3272.

Rental covered in Canada and/or Mexico?

If you have an active auto policy with Liability through Hood Agency (Alaska policy) your policy states the scope of its coverage as limited to "accidents and occurrences within the United States of America, its territories or possessions or Canada, or between their ports."

For travel into Mexico, you would need to add the Limited Mexico Endorsement, which states, "This coverage applies only while the insured auto is within 75 miles of the United States border and only for a period not to exceed ten days after each separate entry into the Republic of Mexico." (other policy terms and conditions apply)

The Motor home and Motorcycle policies have the Mexico coverage written into them and it states the same as the auto endorsement as far as distance and time frame.

Note: Motor vehicle accidents in Mexico are subject to the laws of Mexico, NOT the United States. In some cases, part or all of the policy may NOT be recognized by Mexican authorities. You should consider purchasing coverage from a licensed Mexican insurance company.

For more info call the office, we also have discounts on all major rental car companies.

Facts about Distracted Driving

  • Distracted driving is the number one killer of American teens. Alcohol-related accidents among teens have dropped. But teenage traffic fatalities have remained unchanged, because distracted driving is on the rise. (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and State Farm Insurance Study and NHTSA Study)
  • While over 90% of teen drivers say they don't drink and drive, nine out of 10 say they've seen passengers distracting the driver, or drivers using cell phones. (National Teen Driver Survey)

Working on ways to save more money

If you could save 12% on your auto insurance, simply by paying your six month premiums in full a day or more before your renewal, would you do it?

Do you buy Gap Insurance?

Just bought a new car? What if an accident occurred soon after taking your brand new ride off the lot? You have full coverage insurance, right? So, you're covered... or maybe not.

When you drive your new car off the lot the value of your vehicle plummets, sometimes as much as 20%-30%. Say for instance you pay $25,000 for your new vehicle and have an accident a month later. You probably have only made at the most one payment and if you did not put any money down your loan amount is still close to the $25,000 purchase price. Unfortunately, even with full coverage, which includes comprehensive and collision, you will only receive the market value of your vehicle which could be as much as 20%-30% lower than the purchase price. That means you may be stuck paying that 20%-30%. On a $25,000 car, just a 20% depreciation would be $5,000! That amount could be more if you financed your taxes and license into your loan.

GAP stands for Guaranteed Auto Protection. Most people just use the term GAP to represent the gap in coverage between how much one owes on a car and how much the car is worth. GAP insurance is necessary in almost all cases and is relatively low cost. GAP insurance is a must if you are buying or leasing a new vehicle and should not be something that you decided to skip to cut costs.

So if you are buying a vehicle, and do your research and negotiate a good deal, and put down 20% or greater on a car, GAP isn't something you'll need to add at the finance desk. If you're not sure ask us! We can help with this decision.

We have a coverage available (gold and platinum plans) for new cars (never been titled before) a coverage for a small fee, that will either pay off your loan or replace your car within the first three years. Call for more information.

Lightning

Yesterday in Fairbanks and North Pole we had a lot of thunder and lightning, thus far we had one customer's house get struck causing sizable damage mainly to electronics. Here are some tips and information for this time of year.

Over 1,000 people get struck by lightning every year in the United States, and over 100 of them die as a result of the strike. Lightning is a very dangerous force that, yes, can even reach you indoors if you're in contact with the telephone or plumbing.

lightning image
Pete Turner/Getty Images
Lightning has the ability to strike a house or near a house and impart an electrical charge to the metal pipes used for plumbing.
If lightning strikes the phone line outside your house, the strike will travel to every phone on the line -- and potentially to you if you are holding the phone. So, if you are indoors during a lightning storm, stay off the phone. If you must call someone, use a cordless or cell phone -- that way, you're not in contact with any wires that run outdoors.

Stay away from plumbing pipes like your bath tub or shower, as well. Lightning has the ability to strike a house or near a house and impart an electrical charge to the metal pipes used for plumbing. If you're touching those pipes or anything connected to those pipes, that electrical charge has a path to you. This threat is not as great as it used to be, because PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is often used for indoor plumbing these days. If you are not sure what your pipes are made of, wait it out.

And while you're at it, switch off your appliances and electronics before the storm hits. Such devices as your computer, television and air conditioner all provide potential pathways between the lightning and you.

Home security is an important factor for many homeowners, and there are many security measures a homeowner can take. From trimming bushes back to installing deadbolt locks and motion sensing lights, there are numerous things homeowners can do to protect their home from would-be intruders.
