Teen Drivers

In the state of Alaska roughly 20% of all accident fatalities and injuries involve teen drivers. Much like other states across the country, driving at night, driving with too many passengers in the car, and drunk driving are major causes for most teen accidents. What’s even more alarming is 24.4% of Alaska’s teen drivers with consuming arrests will go on to commit another DUI offense before their 31st birthday.

Although auto insurance premiums will increase if you add a teen to your policy or purchasing teen auto insurance will always be pricier than other policies, there are ways to qualify for discounts on teen auto insurance. Auto insurance companies offer discounts ranging from 10-15% or more for:

• Maintaining at least a B average
• Successful completion of the teenSMART Program

You can also lower your premiums on teen auto insurance if you avoid purchasing sports and luxury cars for your teen, if you opt for a higher deductible, or if you combine insurance policies into one (i.e. life, home, health, renter’s, etc.).

Hulk Hogan had to use his own money to settle out-of-court a lawsuit filed by the estate of his son’s injured passenger, John Graziano, because Hogan’s insurance was inadequate, the lawsuit says.

Terry Bollea’s (aka “Hulk Hogan”) recent lawsuit against his former lawyers at Zuckerman Spaeder, has several lessons to teach consumers.

Here’s the short version of the story. Bollea’s son, Nick, was involved in a very serious car crash when he was 17 years old. In fact, his passenger was permanently injured. The Bollea family had car insurance with Progressive Insurance Company. Progressive carried $250,000 of coverage, which is way too low a figure without PUP. This is yet another example of how direct companies like Geico and Progressive can cost you a whole lot with their “15 minute Auto Quotes.” or “Name your Price” For these companies, $250,000 in coverage means that your insurance will only cover you for up to a total of $250,000 in damage. But, if your assets exceed $250,000 in value, you will be personally liable for the difference. Far too often, I have seen Geico and Progressive customers, who have large, costly holes in their coverage, actually think they are saving money on their insurance.

After Nick’s accident, Bollea did not notify Progressive of the incident. Instead, the Bollea family hired the Zuckerman Spaeder law firm to represent young Nick in any civil claim and any criminal claim that might arise from the accident. The family agreed to pay an astonishing $550 per hour for legal services. Ultimately, the Bollea family paid the law firm a grand total of $1,500,000 in fees.

Now, Bollea is suing his son’s former law firm, alleging that the firm failed to notify him that Progressive would have provided a legal defense at no financial cost. If the allegations are true, these lawyers could be in a heap of trouble.

Three Simple Lessons:

#1: Make sure you have enough coverage from your Insurance company to protect all of your assets.

#2: If you cause an auto accident, your insurance company will pay for your defense.

#3: If you cause an auto accident, call your Agent first ( assuming you have one ) to help you with the claim process.

As a parent, it’s scary when your kids start driving. You’re worried about their safety. You pray they behave responsibly.

Flood Insurance FAQ's

Let's say the river near your home overflows its banks after an excessive rainfall, causing severe damage to your home and its contents. Your homeowners insurance takes care of all related costs, yes or no?

Answer: Not at all! Why? Because damages caused by floods are specifically excluded from all homeowners policies. You need to have a separate flood insurance policy in order to be covered.

Flood insurance is a very necessary coverage for those who live in flood prone areas, and even for those in low-to-moderate risk areas. However, it is important to understand that while homeowners insurance is designed to bring your home and its contents back to the same condition it was in before a loss, flood insurance is only meant to get you back on your feet. To understand more about how this coverage operates and what it covers, please visit this site: http://www.myfloodzone.com/

Q: How do I find out if I'm located in a Flood Zone?
A: There's only one (1) way to know for sure; and that is with a Certified Flood Zone Determination.
Q: If I'm not in a flood zone, is flood insurance still available?
A: Yes. It's quite affordable and should be considered. Even though you're not in a flood zone, your home could fall victim to flood as a result of severe weather conditions coupled with poor drainage in your community, your neighborhood, or even on your property. If this occurs, your normal homeowners or renters policy will not cover the loss. Only flood insurance will protect you from flood related damage.

A will is very important! Do you have one?

There are both practical and emotional reasons why you should make a will. Solicitors always cite the practical reasons: namely that if you are a co-habiting couple then if you die, your partner cannot inherit from you. This is a fact, so all non married couples need to have a will each.

If you do marry to you enter into a civil partnership, then any will that you have is rendered invalid, meaning that if you marry and then get divorced, any previous will is invalid, so your ex may inherit from you.....

Even if you are married if you have children then it is important to have a will so that you can decide what happens if you both die. If there is no will and you and your spouse both die, then the courts will decide who has the children. Given that this is such an important issue, shouldn't you have a will, just to ensure that they are safe and well looked after?

Start a will today and once complete, deposit your will with the superior court clerk's office for $40, this will make finding your wishes easy!

Why should I use a Realtor?

Real estate transactions involve one of the biggest financial investments most people experience in their lifetime. Transactions today usually exceed $100,000. If you had a $100,000 income tax problem, would you attempt to deal with it without the help of a CPA? If you had a $100,000 legal question, would you deal with it without the help of an attorney? Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider a deal in real estate without the professional assistance of a REALTOR®. Here are a Dozen reason:
  1. Will determine your buying power
  2. They have many resources to assist you in your home search.
  3. Assistance in the selection process by providing objective information about each property.
  4. They will help you negotiate.
  5. They will provide due diligence during the evaluation of the property.
  6. Will help you in understanding different financing options and in identifying qualified lenders.
  7. They will guide you through the closing process and make sure everything flows together smoothly.
  8. Provide up-to-date information on what is happening in the marketplace and the price, financing, terms and condition of competing properties.
  9. Will market your property to other real estate agents and the public.
  10. They know when, where and how to advertise your property.
  11. Help you objectively evaluate every buyer's proposal without compromising your marketing position.
  12. Can help close the sale of your home.

Buying or building a home this year FAQ's on low appraisals

Ordering an appraisal is an important step in the home buying or building process, because the appraiser's report offers a close estimate of a property's true value.

The phone rings. It's your lender. Your home appraisal just came in $5,000 below sales price.

What was shaping up to be a smooth home purchase just got rocky. With uncertainty surrounding property values across the USA, a low property appraisal has become more common. So what do you do when such a situation arises that could kill the deal?

First, stay calm. Get in touch with your real estate agent and run through the options. If you made it this far, everyone involved is probably operating in good faith. All parties would like to see the transaction close. Given those assumptions, your options include:

  1. Dispute the Appraisal
  2. Talk with your Lender
  3. Buyer Pays More Down
  4. Seller and Buyer Negotiate
  5. Seller Reduces Price

1. Dispute the Appraisal

Talk with your REALTOR®. Is the contract sales price a fair assessment of the property value based on a well-prepared comparable market analysis (CMA)? Disputing the appraisal may sound out of the norm, but to dispute a property appraisal could be reasonable depending on a few key factors:

  • Where is the appraiser based? Did they perform an appraisal in a housing market that they may not know well?
  • Did the appraiser have adequate information about the subject property? (Perhaps the hardwood floors and the granite counter tops were items of value that the appraiser overlooked.)
  • What were the comparable properties that were used in the appraisal? Were the comparable properties fair? Oftentimes, agents involved in the transaction have actual knowledge of the comparable properties, and can assist the appraiser.

After providing an appraiser with a handful of further pertinent comparables, the appraisal can sometimes be adjusted to come in at the contract sales price.

Renters insurance, why it's so popular.

If renter's insurance doesn't seem like a big deal to you, look at it this way: if you're a renter and something happens to your residence, you might lose everything, and no one is responsible. Not your property manager or landlord. No one. Even in the event of a fire or a flood, your landlord is not legally responsible to cover the damages or find a place to move until the repairs are made.

You may not think your belongings are worth much and they may not be. But the way to look at it is to think about how much it would cost to replace them. For example, what would it cost to buy a new wardrobe if your clothes smelled like smoke from a fire? What about your TV, computer, other electronics, the quesadilla maker, the blender, cookware—what if they’re all damaged and need to be replaced?

Successful Roundtable Event

Thank you to all that attended the round table event last night. We had a great attendance and the information that was discussed was very valuable. We plan to have more this year, if you want to be on the list please email a017359@allstate.com with your suggestions on subjects and your desire to attend. Testimonial from last night's event:

Katherine,

I really appreciate these round table LIFE important meetings. The information was an eye opener and will save us a lot of grief and give us the ability to save our estate from unnecessary losses to the Government.

I would recommend these meetings to anyone who cares enough to protect their families with insurance. They will understand what could happen if they failed to protect the proceeds of a policy and what ever possessions they accumulate over a lifetime.

Jerry and Kim Wicklund

Thanks again
