Now that school is underway, it's time to consider another way that to save on your auto insurance. The Resident Student Discount offers a discount for licensed children attending school away from home. This discount is available in Alaska. To qualify for the Resident Student Discount, the operator must:*Reside away from home at a school, college or other educational institution located at least 100 miles away from the place of principal garaging of the rated automobile.
*Not have a car with them when they are away at school.
{Essentially, a student who meets the distance requirement may be classified as a restricted operator and receive the Resident Student Discount. This is an item discount; it only applies to the automobile on which the student is rated.}

It is important to remember that in order to receive the discount, the student cannot have an automobile with him or her at school. The intent of the Resident Student Discount is that the student is still a member of the household {or you are financially responsible}, but only drives a vehicle on the policy occasionally when he or she returns home from school on holidays, weekends or vacations. If the student has a car with him or her at school, he or she will not receive the discount. The amount of the Resident Student Discount is approximately 10% on the car originally rated on.
